‘Dyno’-mite day for Elite Performance
It was another successful high-powered staging of the Mobil Dyno Shootout which was recently held in Linstead, St Catherine, reported event organiser Roland Crawford, CEO, Elite Performance.
“It was a great event. Mobil and FESCO came on board as sponsors. We had over 80 participants on the dyno to see who made the most horsepower,” said Crawford.
A dynamometer, or dyno, is a testing tool that measures the force, torque, and power output of engines. Elite Performance owns one of the few chassis dynamometers on the island, where vehicles are strapped to the device and their horsepower is measured at the drive wheels. It is also used to help in the tuning of modifications done to an engine.
Competitors entered their vehicles into any of the several classes split by engine displacement, fuel type, and power adder. For Crawford, this is the fourth staging of the Dyno Shootout having started the event in 2020. Each time he has enhanced the event to suit the growing demands.
“This year, we included an automotive scale to weigh the entry cars. Most don’t know how much their cars weigh, so they just keep throwing horsepower into the car, which sometimes creates an unbalanced power-to-weight ratio. We saw a gutted race Honda as light as 1,490lb, while we saw another Honda with full interior weighing in at 2,480lb.”
Amongst the entrants vying for the prizes on hand was former Olympic sprinter Asafa Powell. Other various class winners were the likes of Team Bowla Motorsport and Wilmotorsports.
“Asafa Powell’s Mercedes CLK63 Black Series weighed in at 3,580lb. He made 468 wheel horsepower on 90-octane gas. He won the pump gas class for his engine displacement.”
As this year saw the highest interest in the event Crawford will be making substantial adjustments for 2025.
“Feedback from our participants has them requesting it to be twice per year. So, for 2025, we will move to two events annually. We are planning for a summer 2025 event and our traditional November 2025 dyno shoot-out.”
