Stand-off in Spalding
Gunmen surrender after shoot-out
SPALDING, Clarendon — A brazen attempted robbery of a supermarket ended in a gun battle leaving a policeman, four alleged criminals, and a civilian nursing bullet wounds here on Sunday after a tense, hours-long stand-off.
Sources told the Jamaica Observer that sometime shortly before 2:00 pm a police team responded to reports of an armed robbery in progress at a supermarket in Spalding.
According to the reports, when the police arrived they were fired on by a group of gunmen in the supermarket, and they returned fire.
The gunmen reportedly tried to avoid capture by locking themselves inside a building in Spalding square.
The police established a perimeter around the building and called for the assistance of Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and Jamaica Fire Brigade.
The barricading resulted in a stand-off for over two hours. A video, live-streamed on social media, shows men suffering from injuries and pleading with police as they surrendered.
Up to press time on Sunday the men, who were still unidentified, remained hospitalised under police guard while police sources said the civilian and injured policeman were also being treated.
Police said four firearms, including an AK-47, were seized following the incident.
The stand-off drew a crowd of onlookers to Spalding square.
