Security, logistics priorities for Vybz Kartel’s Freedom Street
With the countdown on for Vybz Kartel’s highly anticipated Freedom Street event at the National Stadium on New Year’s Eve, organisers are putting security front and centre.
More than 700 security personnel will be on hand to ensure the event goes off without a hitch, creating a safe and controlled environment for the thousands of fans expected to pack the venue.
Leemore Palmer, head of security for the event, revealed that Downsound Entertainment, producers of Freedom Street, is sparing no effort to deliver a seamless experience.
“We have 300 police officers and 400 privately acquired security personnel on board,” Palmer explained. “Canines will be stationed around the perimetre and in parking lots, and all entrance points will be tightly controlled. In addition, cameras will be strategically placed throughout the venue, monitored by Digiview, to ensure everything runs smoothly.”
Downsound Entertainment CEO Joe Bogdanovich emphasised the importance of safety at the event.
“Our top priority is creating an environment where everyone can enjoy the show without any concerns,” he said. “We’re not just delivering a historic event; we’re delivering peace of mind. Fans deserve to feel safe while they celebrate the music they love.”
To streamline traffic flow, organisers are providing shuttle services from three key locations: Heroes’ Park, 8 West King’s House Road, and Jamaica College. Only select patrons with Centre Stage or Pod tickets will have access to on-site parking, with clear distinctions for different sections of the venue.
“Personnel will be stationed throughout the stadium to ensure patrons remain in their designated areas, maintaining order and ease of movement,” Palmer noted.
In response to concerns about road congestion, several thoroughfares will be temporarily converted into one-way streets to facilitate smoother traffic flow both to and from the stadium.
Police patrols will be active in the surrounding areas.
Bogdanovich also addressed safety measures for firearm holders: “Licensed firearms will not be permitted inside the stadium, but we’ve arranged secure storage on-site for those who need it. We’re covering every angle to ensure all attendees feel secure.”
Palmer stressed that any disruptive behaviour would be swiftly addressed. “Whilst the approach is not to escalate situations, there are extraction teams in place to remove rowdy patrons immediately, revoking their access and accreditation if necessary. We want this to be a safe, enjoyable event for all.”
He added that security personnel will be on location until all patrons have exited the venue.
Freedom Street is billed to be an unforgettable celebration of music and unity.
Bogdanovich summed it up: “We’re making history, and we’re doing it the right way.”
