Reggae Boy Antonio recovering after car crash
Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) President Michael Ricketts and national senior men’s team Head Coach Steve McClaren have both wished Reggae Boy Michail Antonio a “speedy recovery” after the player was involved in a car crash in England on Saturday.
News broke on Saturday that Antonio, 34, who also plays for English Premier League team West Ham United, had been involved in what appeared to be a single-vehicle accident and was admitted to a London hospital, but the circumstances surrounding the crash have not been disclosed.
A release from JFF later in the day said, “We can confirm that Michail is conscious and communicating and is under close supervision at a hospital in London.
“At this moment in time, on behalf of West Ham United and the Jamaica Football Federation, we kindly ask everyone to respect the privacy of Michail and his family.”
A report carried by BBC yesterday said, “Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said it attended the scene of the accident in Epping on Saturday afternoon and released a man trapped in his car.
“Crews were called at 1:02 pm this afternoon, after reports of a road traffic collision involving one car. Firefighters reported that a man was trapped in his car and worked to release him by 1:45 pm. The casualty was left in the care of the ambulance service.”
The BBC report also said, “Essex Police said officers were investigating a serious crash involving a Ferrari, and asking for witnesses and dashcam footage.”
Antonio had been included in Jamaica’s most recent call-ups, for the Concacaf Nations League quarter-finals against the USA, but failed to make the trip after misplacing his UK passport.
McClaren was quoted to have said, “On behalf of the entire group of players, support staff and technical staff, I would like to wish Michail a speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with him at this time.”
Ricketts was quoted as saying, “On behalf of the entire Jamaica Football Federation family, I would like to wish Michail a safe and speedy recovery. At this point, let us keep him in our prayers as he recovers.”
Meanwhile, the Premier League and several clubs have also showed support for the West Ham record Premier League scorer, the BBC report went on to say.
The Premier League, they reported, had said the “thoughts and prayers” of everyone at the organisation are with “Antonio, his family, friends, and all at West Ham”.
