Unspun dominates Mr Sensational Trophy with impressive come-from-behind victory
UNSPUN, a talented two-year-old American-bred dark bay/brown colt, extended his winning streak to two with a resounding victory in the $2-million Mr Sensational Trophy on Saturday, November 30, 2024.
The Restricted Stakes contest, open to native-bred and imported two-year-olds, was race number three in the Betting, Gaming & Lotteries Commission (BGLC)/Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) Millionaire Series.
Trained by Donovan Hutchinson and ridden by Christopher Mamdeen, Unspun (Spun to Run – U Needa Ride) employed a clever, come-from-behind strategy to win the 7-furlong (1,400m) race by an impressive 2½ lengths.
Unspun broke well but initially struggled to keep pace with the early leaders. Unruly Mo (Shane Ellis), Burning Edge (Dick Cardenas), and Hazelnut (Dane Dawkins) set the fractions down the backstretch while Unspun bided his time, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
That moment arrived rounding the half-mile (800m) turn as Unspun began to make significant ground. Mamdeen expertly guided his mount through a narrow opening between horses in deep stretch, and Unspun surged forward, taking the lead and crossing the wire with ease.
Burning Hedge finished second, with Danka (Tevin Foster) claiming third place. The final time for the race was 1:27.0.
