Parent-teacher association calls for national school bus system amid tragic death of students in crash
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The National Parent-Teacher Association of Jamaica (NPTAJ) is urging Prime Minister, Andrew Holness to step in and take decisive action in prioritising the establishment of a national school bus system to prevent further loss of lives of students in motor vehicle crashes.
The association made the call in a statement on Tuesday while condemning the “reckless and irresponsible driving displayed by many motorists” which it said continues to endanger lives on our roads.
The association noted Monday’s motor vehicle crash involving several students in Clarendon, two from Lennon High School who succumbed to their injuries.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, loved ones, and the entire Lennon High School community. The NPTAJ stands ready to provide its support during this difficult time,” the association said.
“Since 2010, we have consistently appealed to the Ministries of Education, Skills, Youth and Information and of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport to establish a national school bus system to ensure the safe transportation of our students by responsible, trained drivers,” it continued.
The NPTAJ noted that a pilot program was implemented for PATH students in 2017 with the expectation of a national rollout shortly thereafter. However, it said the lack of progress remains alarming.
“We are now urging Prime Minister, Andrew Holness to step in and take decisive action in prioritising the establishment of a national school bus system. The loss of one life is one too many, and today, we mourn the futures of two promising young people senselessly cut short,” the association said.
The NPTAJ is also requesting an audience with the prime minister and the Ministers of Education and Transport no later than Monday, December 9, 2024.
“Swift action is necessary to protect the lives of our children — it is a matter of life and death. Concurrently, we appeal to the Police High Command to enforce stricter measures against reckless and careless motorists who disregard the rules of the road,” the association said.
“Enough is enough. Too many families have suffered from the careless actions of those who show no regard for the sanctity of life. The time to act is now,” it added.
