QQ tackles violence against women
With violence against women still impacting society, dancehall artiste QQ has taken a stance against it with his latest song Fi Har Own.
“Seeing and acknowledging all the violence women go through definitely evokes some emotion in me. I felt the need to speak out because, as entertainers, we have a unique opportunity to help people convey their concerns to the masses; we’re the ones that people look to to know what is happening… only when something happens there’s a big uproar about it, then it dies down in two days. So, I wanted to lend a voice to this, to something that transcends beyond two days,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
Produced by VSR Records, the track was released on November 22, just before International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25.
The singer, whose given name is Kareem Dawkins, also said that the listeners’ feedback has been promising.
“So far, the feedback has been good. It’s hard for someone to listen to a song like that and not have some form of positive feedback. I’ve seen some of the men in communities like Maverley listen to it and agree with it because they realise that society is becoming a certain way. While every man might not have a father, every man has a mother, and no one wants their mother to go through any type of abuse,” he added.
In 2022, QQ won the Prime Minister’s Youth Award for his contribution to music, particularly his persistence on producing positive music. He noted that his choice in songs align with his values.
“I see myself as a musician and as one that needs to put out certain level of positivity, not just doing things because of the popularity. Obviously, as entertainers, we have times where we have to please the crowd, but a consistent basis, I’ve tried to convey messages that have a deeper meaning to me and that will try to help society,” the artiste said.
He will be releasing other singles and an EP in the coming months.
