Netball Jamaica elections moved to January
Netball Jamaica’s (NJ) annual general meeting (AGM), initially set for this month, has been postponed until January due to the unavailability of its audited financial statements.
NJ elections are overdue, with the last AGM held in 2021. All NJ positions, including the presidency and directorship roles, will be up for re-election at the next AGM. Incumbent President Tricia Robinson is serving her second term.
The AGM was scheduled for December 14, but NJ’s first Vice-President Simone Forbes says the auditor said the financial statements are incomplete, making it impossible to hold the elections this month.
“In terms of why it has been postponed, the auditor has promised us that we would be getting all the outstanding financials for January,” Forbes said. “She has committed to doing so and her recommendation as well is that we wait until we get all the information, documents, and finances before we go ahead with the AGM. So, we decided that we will do that and wait until January.”
Forbes says that while NJ had hoped to hold the AGM this month, it agreed with the auditor’s recommendation to delay the elections until all the necessary documents are available.
“I am happy that we are going to be getting all the audited financials as per the auditor for January,” she said. “We wanted to go ahead with the AGM because it has been so long, but to wait another month to get all the outstanding information while we don’t want to is important and necessary.
“I am extremely happy to see that we will be getting all the information as per the auditor so that we can have the AGM and Netball Jamaica can move forward with all the planning.”
Forbes says all NJ members have been told about the postponement and says next year promises to be a busy one for NJ, starting with a home series against South Africa in January.
“The members want the AGM because we did have a little meeting with the membership and they want the AGM to happen,” she said. “But we explained to them why we could not have it in December and the auditor recommended that we shouldn’t have it yet, so they are waiting as well.
“Netball has so many things coming in the new year starting January, so this just really needs to happen so we can move on.”
