KCCC mounts Christmas at home
The renowned Kingston College Chapel Choir (KCCC) will host Christmas at its North Street home this year.
The KCCC annual Christmas concert is a cherished tradition known for magnificient showcases.
For 2024, audiences are being treated at St Augustine’s Chapel, Clovelly Park, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Kingston College.
The gala event will take place on Sunday, December 15, at 5:00 pm, with cocktails at 4:15 pm on the lawns of St Augustine Chapel at 2a North Street.
The year’s concert will feature a selection of seasonal music, including traditional carols and a major classical work, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Mass in C major, K 259 performed by the talented choristers and guest soloists, a mini orchestra of friends of KCCC will also be under the baton of Choir Director Audley Davidson.
Soloists will be Lori Burnett, soprano; Joshua Swaby, alto; Christine MacDonald-Nevers, contralto; Jesse McClure, tenor; Matthew Hilton, bass.
The carol section of the concert will feature a wide variety of Christmas music from Jamaica and across the world.
Due to the passage of Hurricane Beryl in July the annual choir camp was cancelled. Davidson told the Jamaica Observer that, “The camp is usually where the majority of music is learnt. But the choir has shown particular mettle and has truly responded well to learning the pieces throughout the term. The new boys were auditioned September and vigorous training began to have them prepared for the Christmas presentation.”
In April 2024, the KCCC renewed its membership with the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM), highlighting the choir’s commitment to maintaining high standards in choral music training and performance as well as its dedication to musical excellence.
In May 2024 the choir earned the prestigious RJRGleaner Honour 2023 Award for its unparalleled contribution to Jamaica’s arts and culture. The award celebrates the choir’s extraordinary achievements and underscored its pivotal role in uniting people through the universal language of music.
This year’s Christmas gala will also spotlight the cherished and fully factory renovated J W Walker two-manual organ (75 years old) house in the 77-year-old chapel.
