Glorious Glenmuir!
Historic retention of ISSA Champions Cup for Andrew Peart’s boys
Defending champions Glenmuir High School made history at the National Stadium by becoming the first high school to win back-to-back Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) Champions Cup titles on Saturday.
The Clarendon-based institution defeated former two-time winners Jamaica College (JC) 3-1 in an exciting final.
The Andrew Peart-coached Glenmuir team was led to victory by a double from O’Neil Headley, who scored in the 14th and 53rd minutes. Nyton Allen sealed the win with Glenmuir’s third goal in the 90th minute, while substitute Amarlie King scored for JC in the 32nd minute.
“This is massive for the school,” Peart said. “I think that for us it was all about just winning the game. We had a game in front of us, and we went out there and did the job. We are very happy for this victory because I think that our boys really worked very hard for it and they fought all the way to the line.”
JC’s coach, Davion Ferguson, expressed disappointment but praised his team’s effort.
“I think it was a tough loss,” he said. “Congratulations to Glenmuir because I think they played an excellent game. We knew exactly what they would have brought, and I think we defended stoutly, but also, congratulations to ISSA, I think they had a hand in deciding this final today,” Ferguson said, alluding to what JC feels is the unfair suspension of goalkeeper Tawayne Lynch, one of their key players.
The first half was intense and exciting, as both teams displayed a good mix of attacking football. Glenmuir struck early when Headley fired home a brilliant 25-yard free-kick which went like a rocket past JC’s goalkeeper Adriano Kitson in the 14th minute.
Headley, who had an outstanding game, nearly increased Glenmuir’s lead a few minutes later, but his tame shot from 12 yards went wide of the target.
Despite conceding early, JC pushed forward relentlessly, forcing Glenmuir deep into their half. JC was rewarded when King equalised with a low shot past Glenmuir’s goalkeeper, Justin Murray.
King, a lively presence throughout the match, capitalised on a loose ball in the centre of the box to draw JC level in the 32nd minute.
Glenmuir had an opportunity to restore their lead before half-time, but Headley’s shot from 10 yards, with only Kitson to beat, went wide.
Glenmuir came out firing on all cylinders in the second period as Headley put them ahead again with another thunderbolt free-kick, this time a 20-yard right-footed strike that blazed past Murray and into the net.
Striker Orane Watson, who also had an outstanding game for Glenmuir, came close to extending the lead moments later. However, after receiving a pinpoint pass from Denzil Watson inside the 18-yard box, his shot went wide of the goal.
Allen sealed the victory for Glenmuir in the 90th minute with an easy tap in from point-blank range, cementing their place in the record books as back-to-back Champions Cup winners.
