Swim for the Sanctuary gets underway today
THE White River House will host the annual Jamaica Inn Foundation Swim for the Sanctuary Open Water Swim 2024 today at 7:00 am.
Now in its fourth year, the event, at Shaw Park Beach in Ocho Rios, St Ann, promises to be an exciting and fun-filled morning of swimming, paddle boarding, and water polo.
Timekeeper Allan Beckford says the event has been gaining momentum since its inception in 2021.
“Each year, we have more and more competitors participating and it’s been going well,” Beckford told the Jamaica Observer.
“We should have as many people this year as last year, unless the weather affects those coming in. That’s my only worry so far, as people have been calling and asking if we are having the event. I think the conditions are good; unless something drastic happens, the event should go on.”
All funds raised from the event will go towards White River Fish Sanctuary, which plays a crucial role in protecting and restoring the wildlife in the area.
“If we can allow our fish to breathe we all will be better off at the end of the day,” Beckford said. “Our corals are to protect our shores.”
The event will feature a range of distance events — including the 5K, 3K, 1K, and 500m swims — as well as relays, paddle boarding, and water polo. Whether you’re a seasoned swimmer or just looking for a fun and challenging event, there’s something for everyone.
