Money Market comes good in Gerry Skelton Memorial Trophy
Patience, consistency, and confidence paid off for the connections of Money Market, as the bay colt delivered a noticeable display of speed and power to claim the top prize in the Gerry Skelton Memorial Trophy feature at Caymanas Park on Saturday, November 23, 2024.
Trained by Gary Subratie and ridden by Dane Dawkins, the bay colt put on a show for the crowd, strategically sitting behind runners before unleashing a decisive move on the inside rails to claim victory.
In the Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward, Money Market covered the five and a half furlongs (1,100m) distance in an eye-popping time of 1:06.1, winning by a length and a quarter.
Freedom Street (Larris Allen) made a late surge but ultimately finished second, while
She’s A Godgift (Javaniel Patterson) held on for a respectable finish after leading for much of the race.
This approach to hold Money Market off the pace allowed the bay colt to conserve his energy and perform at his best, resulting in an excellent time.
“We kind of freshened him up after his last race,” Subratie explained. “Going 6½ furlongs was a little bit too far for him and he had to carry 126 lbs.”
Subratie made adjustments to give Money Market a better chance of success.
“Today Money Market got a 6-lb break in the weight and so I knew he had a better chance going this distance,” he said.
The trainer’s strategy was to keep Money Market as fresh as possible.
“I didn’t pressure him too much coming into this race. I just tried to keep him as fresh as possible and he showed up today and it was an excellent time as well,” said Subratie.
