Skillibeng named Billboard Music Awards finalist
Dancehall artiste Skillibeng is the sole Jamaican mentioned among the finalists in the 2024 Billboard Music Awards announced earlier this week.
Zach Bryan leads with 18 mentions, Taylor Swift is nominated in 16 categories, Morgan Wallen has 15 entries in 13 categories, Sabrina Carpenter is mentioned in nine categories.
Skillibeng is featured in the category Top Afrobeats Songs for his collaboration Jump with South African singer Tyla and American rapper Gunna.
The artiste acknowledged the nomination in a post on Instagram.
“It’s an honour to be a finalist for the 2024 BBMAs. Don’t miss the show on Thursday, December 12 at 8 PM ET on Fox-TV,” the post read.
Several members of the entertainment fraternity responded with fire emojis and comments. Among them dancehall artiste Flippa Moggela, selector Chaddy G, record label Desha Records, Busta Rhymes, Pamputtae, ZJ Sparks, and Iba Mahr.
Jump, released in March, is featured on Tyla’s self-titled début album. Produced by Sammy SoSo, it was a commercial success globally, even though it didn’t chart on the Billboard Hot 100. However, the song climbed multiple charts, peaking at #16 on Billboard’s Rhythmic Top 40. It also ranked at #6 on Billboard’s US World Digital Song Sales chart, #42 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, and #3 on Billboard’s US Afrobeats Songs chart. It also made the Billboard Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and Hot R&B Songs charts.
Outside of the US, the song went to #18 in South Africa, #1 for seven weeks on the UK Afrobeats Singles chart, #38 on the UK Singles chart, #3 in Suriname, #22 in New Zealand, #51 in Netherlands, #31 in Greece, and #87 on the Canada Hot 100 chart.
The song has been certified gold in Canada and Brazil.
Jump was named the #4 Song of the Summer for 2024 by Vibe magazine.
