A Love For Me
“It all began mid-June 2015 at a very elegant restaurant in Central Long Island, New York.
“The air was filled with soft music, the clinking of glasses, and the murmur of conversation. From the moment we first set eyes on each other, there was an undeniable connection that would only grow steadily over late-night phone calls, shared laughter, and meaningful conversations,” says Jamaican-born Nadene Gordon of her initial meeting with American James Shinnick.
“Despite being opposites in many ways, our differences only drew us closer. We both enjoy movies and travel, which adds the perfect balance to our relationship,” she continues. As the world faced the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the two found clarity. The fragility of life became a poignant reminder that tomorrow isn’t promised.
The proposal
“On a warm evening in July 2023, under the tropical skies of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, James professed his love and gratitude for me, followed by the words, ‘Will you please be my wife?’
“I responded with my playful self, ‘Only if you get on your knees and ask.’
“Without hesitation, James dropped to one knee and offered a heartfelt proposal.
“I joyously said, Yasssss,” says Nadene.
The nuptials
The wedding was set for Saturday, July 6, 2024, in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
“But just as our love story had its challenges, fate tested us again,” says Nadene. Hurricane Beryl swept through the region mere days before our special day, threatening to upend our plans.
“Friends and family were worried, but James and I were resilient. Nothing would stop our union,” shares Nadene.
“With determination, love, faith in God, and a bit of flexibility, we adapted to the storm’s aftermath. On a serene summer evening, surrounded by loved ones, we exchanged our vows on a beach kissed by golden sunlight and framed by the gentle waves of the Caribbean Sea.
“Our story is one of resilience, opposites attracting, and unwavering commitment — a true inspiration to everyone who witnessed our union.”
