WATCH: Holness confident of a JLP victory in Morant Bay
ST THOMAS, Jamaica- Low voter turnout is of no real concern to Prime Minister, Andrew Holness as he expresses confidence in a resounding Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) victory in the Morant Bay Division.
“I’ve driven around and it is, as I’ve said, just in driving around, you can see that there’s a low turnout– what I have seen so far is that the spirits are very high amongst the Jamaica Labour Party supporters. I’m confident that we have mobilised our base and our supporters and that our workers are working really hard to ensure victory,” he told Jamaica Observer shortly after arriving in the Morant Bay division.
Holness received a heroes welcome from JLP supporters upon on his arrival at the Morant Bay Primary polling location in St Thomas to show support for councillor candidate Winston Downie.
The PM also said the (People’s National Party) PNP’s previous victories in the area were not of significant concern.
“This area, as you know, would vote sometimes for the PNP more often, but what I have detected is that there is a change and I’m expecting that we will have a positive result in favour of the Jamaica Labour Party at the end of the exercise,” he maintained.
The energy in Morant Bay is high with calls of “showa, showa” ringing out behind Holness.
“Andrew Holness body come in like a milk him a bathe inna” one woman declared with glee. Another woman, after being hugged by the prime minister declared to all and sundry, “mi naw bathe tonight.”
Holness declined to take any percentages or actual figures from the party workers on site but said,“the indication from the party workers would be how they’re seeing the turnout, how they’re seeing the voters, what expressions are they giving and we also want to know whether or not our supporters have come out and the report so far is that everything is looking good.”
