Unruly Squid talks music, family, new business ventures
For years, Unruly Squid was the driving force behind the Unruly Camp, led by her brother, dancehall artiste Popcaan. Now, she is carving out her own niche as a businesswoman, since she migrated to Florida.
In addition to recently launching a scented candle business, Unruly Squid (real name Annalecia Sutherland), has stayed close to the music space, with the creation of Pop Star Entertainment, her booking agency, which handles bookings for Jada Kingdom.
“Pop Star Entertainment was what I transitioned to when I moved to the US. I do bookings for Jada Kingdom. I was always helping her behind the scenes and, earlier this year, she made it official that we were working together. We are also looking at expanding the roster and do bookings for other artistes,” Unruly Squid explained.
“Jada is my friend, so it’s fun working with her; there’s never a dull moment. It doesn’t feel like work; it feels like we’re having fun. Being on the road with her is crazy, always a good vibe,” she added.
The music industry endeavour is a truly a family-oriented one with her son, Joel the Engineer, also making his mark in the space with his recent production début.
“I’m so proud of him. He makes beats and records his uncle. I always thought that Joel was going to be a football player, then recently he decided he was gonna make beats. Whatever my son does I support him 150 per cent,” the proud mother shared before noting that she has plans to venture into music production.
“I am thinking about going into producing music, that is something I want to explore soon,” said Unruly Squid.
She is also passionate about her brother Popcaan and believes that he is misunderstood by those who don’t know him.
“He is miserable, but he has the best heart. Him waan help everybody, him waan save everybody literally, and that is why I get so defensive of him whenever people say negative things about him on social media. They don’t know him like I do. This man is such a great human being, but people don’t talk about the things that he has done for them. I really think that he is misunderstood by the public. But my brother doesn’t care about the noise, that’s my brother. We grew up together,” Unruly Squid shared.
“Most people don’t know, but we really campaigned for that highway [in St Thomas]. We went out there with placards and demonstrated for a highway to be built; it was even on the news,” she told the Jamaica Observer’s Splash.
Speaking about the scented candle business venture, Unruly Squid said the idea came from her love for sweet scents.
“I started this business because I love scents. I love smelling good and I usually had candles around my home. And then I thought about going into fragrances, but I chose to go with candles. But I have also evolved into air freshener and car scents. There are other things coming soon that I will reveal later,” Unruly Squid told Splash during a recent interview in Florida.
Although she doesn’t plan to open a physical space right now, Unruly Squid is more focused on getting her products in the retail trade.
The target market for Squid Scents: “The hot girls and the gentlemen who like to smell nice,” Unruly Squid said with a laugh.
“I am trying to get into the retail stores like Walmart and Target. Right now, we ship worldwide, except the UK,” said Unruly Squid, who was chosen by clothing brand Fashion Nova to be their most recent brand ambassador.
