Recommendation for joint industrial council for tourism industry high on LAC meeting agenda
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The recommendations for the establishment of a joint industrial council for the tourism industry to deal with and mitigate concerns for workers in the sector will be discussed at the upcoming meeting of the Labour Advisory Council (LAC).
This is according to the Ministry of Labour. The recommendations were made by the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU) following several industrial actions taken by hotel workers across Jamaica recently.
Calls have also been made by President of the Union of Clerical, Administrative and Supervisory Employees (UCASE), Vincent Morrison in support of the establishment of a joint industrial council for the industry.
The Ministry of Labour said it is currently in the process of developing a strategic approach to addressing the labour concerns coming out of an assessment which was conducted shortly after the industrial actions, the results of which are expected to be available by early January 2025. This will also be high on the LAC meeting agenda.
The ministry noted that the industry assessment will be a critical element in charting the most appropriate course of action in establishing a framework for the swift and efficient management of issues and handling of disputes in the sector.
Portfolio Minister Pearnel Charles Jr said the primary objective of any course of action will be to safeguard the best interests of all stakeholders and reiterated the ministry’s commitment to the continued support of both workers and employers in maintaining harmonious labour relations.
