International School for Development Justice to start offering classes January
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The University of the West Indies (UWI) says its school for development justice will become fully operational next year.
“At the top of our global agenda is development justice; as an example of this commitment is our establishment of the first global online school focused on [it],”said Dr Canute Thompson, Pro Vice Chancellor for the Board of Undergraduate Studies at the UWI, detailing the plans at the National Youth Leaders Symposium on Poverty and Climate Change on Wednesday.
Funded by the United Nations and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the International School for Development Justice (ISDJ) was launched in mid-2024 and will act as “a response to the need to educate and empower current and future activists and leaders,” Thompson said.
The project will see UWI partnering with the State University of New York, University of Glasgow, University of Johannesburg, and the Sustainable Solutions Network at Columbia University.
As early as January 8, 2025, the ISDJ — touted as the first-ever school for development justice — will begin to offer courses specifically tailored to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in areas including climate studies, public health and informatics, sustainability management and more.
Attendees will be able to take short courses or year-long masters degrees courses.
