Favourites Sts Peter and Paul continue hot streak in Alberga Cup
Mona, Liberty secure crucial wins
TITLE favourites Sts Peter and Paul continued their impressive run in the JISA/Canopy Insurance National Under-12 Alberga Cup football competition with a second-consecutive win in the quarter-final group stage, hammering Group C rivals Emmanuel Christian Academy (ECA) 4-0 at Buttercup Park on Monday.
Sts Peter and Paul have now scored 11 goals in their two quarter-final group matches and are the only team left in the competition yet to concede a goal. They have scored 50 in their five preliminary-round matches.
The other team that managed a second-straight win in the quarter-finals was Hillel Academy, but they got their three points without even kicking a ball against El Instituto De Mandevilla, who forfeited the Group B fixture.
In addition to hosts El Instituto failing to show up in time for the matchup, their home field at deCartaret College was being marked a mere 30 minutes after the scheduled start of the match. Referee Rushane Wright, who officially called off the contest, also pointed to the height of the grass, noting that the field would require cutting.
In the other Group B match, Wolmer’s Prep bounced back from their 2-9 trouncing from El Instituto on Saturday to pull a mild surprise on St Andrew, beating them 5-2 at Buttercup Park.
In the day’s most anticipated clash, defending champions Mona got their first win of the round, brushing aside Lannaman’s Prep 3-1 in Group A action, while Liberty Academy took control of the group with a huge 6-1 win over Glenmuir in May Pen.
Monday’s other quarter-final match saw Hydel score a comfortable 5-0 win over American International School of Kingston (AISK).
Wednesday’s final set of quarter-final group matches is set to serve up an intriguing climax, with Liberty — despite sitting atop the group — facing Lannaman’s with the knowledge that anything less than a win will likely lead to their exit from the competition. Only the winners of the three quarter-final groups and the best second-place team will advance to the semi-finals.
