Man assaults girlfriend after she refused his avocado
A man who hit his girlfriend in her face after she refused to accept an avocado from him is to know what impact, if any, a court-ordered social enquiry report will have on his sentencing.
Nicholas Blake, 50, appeared in the St James Parish Court before presiding judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton last Wednesday and pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding.
According to court documents, on September 26 the complainant was at home in Albion when Blake entered the premises and offered her an avocado. The complainant declined the offer, leading to a dispute.
Blake then allegedly hurled a mop stick through the metal grille, striking the complainant in the face and causing a wound.
When given the opportunity to address the situation, Blake explained that he went to her house with the intention of delivering an avocado, despite a previous disagreement. During the visit, he described how she explicitly stated her desire for him not to return to her premises, resulting in a confrontation between them.
“The argument got heated, and she told me what I must go and do with my mother. I asked who she was talking to, and she seh, ‘A you mi talking to, dutty bwoy,’ ” the court heard.
“I then told her to open the grille, and she went for a pepper spray. But when she pressed the tin, nutten nuh come out of it. I then pushed the mop stick through the grille, but mi neva push it wilfully fi it catch her in her face,” he said.
When Fairclough-Hylton asked if he had anything to say before she sentenced him, Blake expressed remorse and told the judge that he didn’t intend to harm his girlfriend.
When the judge asked the defendant why he didn’t just walk away Blake said: “That is what I should have done, but it never came into my thought to walk away.”
Fairclough-Hylton then requested a social enquiry report and deferred sentencing until December 11.
Blake’s bail was extended.
