Excessive autopsy delay causing more suffering
Dear Editor,
On August 11, 2024 a friend of mine died in Portmore. Since that time she has been at the government facility in Ewarton (Sunset) awaiting an autopsy.
At first there was a two-month delay because of Hurricane Beryl. That was somewhat understandable. However, since then her autopsy has been rescheduled three times!
On November 16, 2024 it was once again scheduled to take place. The funeral home, her family, and the police were all on hand. However, the autopsy did not take place. Why? The holding facility in Ewarton did not prep her body and she was not moved to the centre (Tranquillity) where the autopsy would take place.
Needless to say, this has led to further stress for the family and friends, who have been waiting for now three months to lay her to rest.
It is totally unacceptable!
The funeral home scheduled the autopsy and should show more understanding for the family and those who are mourning. Now, the next expected date is to be some time in January 2025.
This is not a decent manner in which to treat a deceased and let the family suffer even further.
With all this, I doubt that this is the first time it has occurred.
