YeCats spelling competition set to inspire young minds in Manchester
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — The inaugural YeCats inclusive spelling competition is poised to bring a unique and inspiring event to Mandeville with a message that resounds across communities: “Celebrating Diversity and Excellence in Spelling.” This landmark event, scheduled for November 27 at Cecil Charlton Hall, Manchester Parish Library, will create an inclusive space where children and teens of all abilities can showcase their unique strengths and talents in spelling.
Organised by YeCats Mobile Resource Centre, this event represents a groundbreaking moment in Jamaica’s educational landscape by embracing and celebrating young learners from all backgrounds.
The competition is the brainchild of Stacey Robinson, a dedicated literacy advocate and founder of YeCats Mobile Resource Centre. In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information’s Region 5, Literacy Unit, this event emphasises that it’s not just reading, it’s life.
“I wanted to create a platform where every child feels valued and confident,” said Robinson who transitioned from a successful career in marketing to a life of teaching and volunteering. Her work through YeCats Mobile Resource Centre reflects her lifelong commitment to literacy, which began in her primary school days.
The event is open to children across four age levels: Kittens (ages 3-5), Cats (ages 6-8), Lions (ages 9- 12), and Cheetahs (ages 13-17). It features four entry categories to ensure inclusivity: grade-level readers, struggling readers, finger spelling (for deaf participants), and special needs. With finger spelling and accommodations for students with special needs, the competition will empower students who may often feel marginalised to stand proud, alongside their peers.
Participants will compete for prizes within their age levels and specific categories, with a special emphasis on personal achievement and progress. These awards, however, represent only a part of the experience as the competition also promises to build confidence and instil a love of learning in its participants.
Parents and teachers have responded enthusiastically to this first-of-its-kind initiative.
“I believe this is an incredible opportunity for our children, especially those who need an extra boost in confidence,” shared one parent. “It’s about more than spelling; it’s about belonging.”
The event registration is open until November 22. Registration for the competition can be done at Manchester Parish Library or via YeCats Mobile Resource Centre with a direct message to its Instagram page @yecatsmobileresourcecentre.
