Key clashes in L P Martin St Mary cricket
THREE key clashes are slated for Sunday in the L P Martin St Mary 35 Overs Elite Cricket Competition.
Highgate are set to take on Hamilton Mountain at Boscobel Oval; Mango Valley versus Geddes Town will take place at Mango Valley; and Jack’s River will oppose Bonnie Gate at Bonnie Gate.
At Boscobel Oval, highly touted Highgate will start favourites against newcomers Hamilton Mountain who are winless in the competition also sponsored by Costley Construction, Sandals Royal Plantation and Sandals Dunn’s River.
Highgate possess a mix of high-class, experienced cricketers and young players. With the likes of Renar Ross, Jamaican Under-15 representative Tyson Gordon, Johnyine Stanford, Samuel McIntosh and national Under-19 player Jevone Wynter, they should be too strong for the Hamilton Mountain aggregation.
At Mango Valley, Geddes Town will be looking to Renaldo Ingram, Tevin Mitchell, Jermaine McEachron and young St Mary player Devonte Miller to set the pace against Mango Valley — a team with talents such as Michael Belnavis, Tevon Shaw, Roland Brooks and Sheldon Thompson.
The encounter at Bonnie Gate should be a gripping one as the hosts are expecting captain and St Mary parish representative Javiere Green to lead from the front. He will be assisted by Jason Goldson and Shavaughn Boyd.
Jack’s River have a balanced unit led by Lesmond Lewis and which includes talented youngsters Jiovanni Richardson and Tyreese Saunders.
First vice-president of St Mary Cricket Association Junior Mattison expects the games to be exciting as teams jostle for positions.
“The standard of play in the competition has been every high and we expected that to continue this weekend,” Mattison said. “Despite some setbacks due to the recent rains, we are pleased at the way the competition has been going — and hats off to our main sponsors L P Martin Funeral Home and Costley Construction for stepping up and ensuring that cricket remains vibrant in the parish of St Mary.”
Zachary Irwin, executive chairman of L P Martin Funeral Home, pledged his company’s assistance in the development of the sport in the parish, noting that sponsorship of the competition is a partnership with the community, affording players a chance to show their talent.
