2024 was a blast!
• After previous The Voice rejection, Nigy Boy pleased with year’s success • Singer to drop début EP January 8
On two occasions singer Nigy Boy auditioned to participate in the television singing competition The Voice. After all, another Jamaican, Tessanne Chin, had won the title in 2013. However, he didn’t make it past the interview phase of the competition.
“I first auditioned during the heights of the pandemic while I was attending college and living on campus. I sent in an audition video and they didn’t get back to me. About a year later I sent in another audition video and this time they got back to me and told me that I was going on to the next level, and I filled out some forms that they sent to me. I then moved onto the interview phase, and I was happy and excited, but I didn’t make it any further. It was a learning experience,” Nigy Boy told the Jamaica Observer in a recent interview in Florida.
But 2024 would prove to be the year for Nigy Boy’s musical career, as late last year when he hopped on to music producer Rvssian’s Dutty Money rhythm, he scored big with Continent. He later followed up with another Rvssian-produced ditty, this time it was Judgement on the Payment Plan rhythm. And then he scored another hit with Nomad, produced by DJ Frass.
Along the journey in 2024, Nigy Boy performed at several events both locally and overseas. He was recognised by several entities, including the New York Assembly, the Mayor of Montego Bay, and he also received a citation at this year’s staging of Reggae Sumfest.
“My best memory of 2024, that’s hard to say. So many things have happened. Reggae Sumfest was a blast, performing with Mr Vegas in Belize was a memorable experience. All these awards, citations, and being honoured at the New York State Assembly, I feel humbled by all of what has happened. These accolades signify that my music is resonating with people from all walks of life, no matter the background you’re from,” Nigy Boy shared.
He thanked his fans and team for motivating him and for being the force to encourage him to continue on his musical path.
“It’s the people and my drive to always outdo myself, to exceed my own expectations that keep me going. Without the support of my fans, me the artiste, I’m really nothing. I can only do so much. The people behind me, putting in that outside feedback of my work, is really one of giving their perspective. I’ve always been a fighter; I’ve always wanted to do more for myself. I just have to keep pressing on and don’t stop,” Nigy Boy explained.
In early 2025, Nigy Boy is set to release his début EP. The project will arrive on his birthday (January 8).
“The EP is completed and everything is almost finalised. The producers, I don’t want to reveal that information as yet. Trust and believe, this project is going to be something legendary. It’s a great body of work and I can’t wait for everybody to hear it,” he said.
One of his latest singles is Ole Gyalis, produced by New York-based Bobby Konders for Massive B. A video for the song was recently shot in Fort Lauderdale.
“Bobby has always been in my corner pushing my music from I was an unknown artiste. He reached out and said he’s reviving a rhythm and that was the birth of Ole Gyalis. It was a joy working with him,” said Nigy Boy.
Asked to share his thoughts about the nominees in the Best Reggae Album category of the 67th Grammy Awards, Nigy Boy said; “What I do like is that the young talents, talents of this generation and generations past, are gaining that recognition. It’s just a joy to see that the talents are being recognised. It just shows that the music is reaching all sorts of people. I really like where the music is going. As far as whether it reflects what’s going on, I can’t say. The Grammy is a big thing. It takes a lot of hard work and consistency.”
Nigy Boy has performances in Grenada and St Vincent before he takes the stage at Rebel Salute 2025.
