Fireworks expected as daCosta Cup semi-final race heats up
Fireworks are expected as six teams hunt the three remaining places in the semi-finals of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/Wata daCosta Cup football competition.
Glenmuir High School, last season’s finalists, have already secured their place in the semi-final, while Frome Technical have been eliminated from contention after losing their first two games in the quarter-finals.
St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and McGrath High will be going after the lone spot from Group A to join Glenmuir High.
In Group B all four schools — Garvey Maceo High, Central High, Munro College and Ocho Rios High — are still in with a chance to advance.
With only Glenmuir High assured of a place, it is expected that the teams in contention will be going all-out for wins which will ensure safe passage.
The Group B situation is intriguing with several permutations, but leaders Garvey Maceo High need only a draw against Ocho Rios High to claim their spot in the semi-final.
Garvey Maceo High rebounded from Saturday’s 2-2 result against Central High, during an encounter in which they led 2-0, to beat Munro College 3-0 on Wednesday. Garvey Maceo are on four points.
Ocho Rios High will be hoping for another miracle at Drax Hall after they had to come back from 0-2 down to earn a 2-2 result against Dinthill Technical to advance to the quarter-finals.
They need a win after drawing back-to-back games away to Munro College and Central High.
The clash between Munro College, who are at the bottom of the points table with a single point, and Central High is shaping up to be a winner-take-all battle.
Central High have battled hard in this round, coming back from two goals down after eight minutes against Garvey Maceo before holding a potent Ocho Rios High to a 1-1 result on Wednesday. But they will be up against hosts Munro College who have their backs to the wall.
St Elizabeth Technical, in second place in Group A, would advance with a draw in their game against Glenmuir High at STETHS Sports Complex in Santa Cruz.
McGrath High, who are on one point, must beat out-of-contention Frome Technical by a wide margin if they are to stay in contention.
If STETHS lose their game, then McGrath High, who have a negative three goal-difference, must win by at least five goals.
