Two cops in triple killing detained
TWO policemen have been detained following their involvement in the shooting death of three young men in east Kingston early Sunday morning.
The men — 17-year-old Oshane Stubbs, 19-year-old Orando Campbell and 20-year-old Kayshawn Smith — were killed in what police reported was a shoot-out.
According to the police, the men were part of a robbery ring in the eastern end of the city.
Superintendent Tomilee Chambers, commander of the East Kingston Police Division, in a report carried by the Jamaica Observer Monday, said: “My team was travelling on Windward Road when men aroused their suspicion and the police team stopped and alighted from their unit and gave verbal instructions to the men. After doing that, the men pulled their firearms and opened fire at the police team. The police took evasive action and returned fire. After the gunfire subsided, all three men were discovered with gunshot wounds. Two firearms were beside them.”
However, on Thursday the Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom) said significant evidence uncovered during its investigations prompted the commission to formally write to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), requesting that the two policemen involved in the triple shooting be detained.
In a statement on Thursday, the JCF said it remains steadfast in its pursuit of professionalism, transparency and will continue to cooperate fully with the relevant oversight bodies in this and all such matters.
“Based on information received relating to the recent fatal shooting incident in east Kingston involving members of the JCF, the high command has instructed that the policemen involved be detained while the Independent Commission of Investigations continues its probe.
“The high command reiterates its full support of members who act within the law in the execution of their duties and is committed to the principle of accountability. The high command wishes to assure the public of our commitment to support thorough and impartial investigations carried out by Indecom, ensuring that the ends of justice are served,” said the JCF.
