Two charged in Maggotty supermarket murder
Police have arrested and charged two Manchester men in relation to last month’s murder and robbery at a supermarket in Maggotty, St Elizabeth.
Ramanno Smile, a 30-year-old electrician, and 35-year-old chef Shawn Reid, both of Knock Patrick in Manchester, were held on Thursday, November 14 by detectives assigned to the St Elizabeth Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) for the October 19 killing of 62-year-old Aggrey Atkinson. Two illegal firearms were reportedly seized in the operation.
Reports are that the men entered a supermarket in Maggotty and posed as customers before one of them brandished a handgun, and the other stood at the door as the lookout. The man with the gun allegedly jumped the counter and robbed the owner of an undetermined amount of phone cards, cigarettes and money.
During the melee, Atkinson, a businessman of Russell Hill district in the parish, was shot and killed. The men then escaped in a waiting motorcar.
A report was made to the police and the men sought and arrested.
Both are now facing charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, robbery with aggravation, possession of prohibited weapon and unauthorised possession of ammunition. Their court dates are being finalised.
