Sean Paul receives honorary degree from UTech
KINGSTON, Jamaica— Grammy-award winning dancehall artiste Sean Paul Henriques received an honorary doctorate during Friday’s graduation ceremony at the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech).
Sean Paul was conferred with the Doctor of Letters Honoris Causa after a biographical sketch of his accomplishments was read. He was then invited to sign the register of the graduates.
The artiste found stardom in 2002 with the success of his second studio album, Dutty Rock. He had enrolled in UTech in pursuit of a degree in hospitality and tourism management, but his passion for music ultimately led him to leave before completing his studies.
He went on to receive numerous awards for music, and received the Order of Distinction from the Jamaican Government in 2019 for his contribution to the global popularity and promotion of reggae music.
Over the weekend, other honorary graduates will be conferred with degrees, including former Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson, who will receive the Doctor of Technology Honoris Causa, and Christopher Zacca, prominent Jamaican business leader who will receive the Doctor of Laws Honoris Causa.
UTech President Dr Kevin Brown had previously expressed pleasure in honouring the men for their contribution to the development of Jamaica.
“The University of Technology, Jamaica is pleased to honour these distinguished nation-builders in recognition of their stellar contributions to Jamaica’s growth and development. Their dedication and impact serve as an inspiration to all, and we celebrate their achievements as we encourage our graduates to emulate their success,” Dr Brown had said.
The university’s graduation ceremonies continue on Saturday at 10:00 am at Alfred Sangster Auditorium, Papine Campus where graduates of the College of Business and Management, the Faculty of Science and Sport, the Faculty of The Built Environment, and the Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies will receive their academic awards.
