Captain Sparrow gets the nod in URTAJ Trophy feature
The highly anticipated $1.19-million United Racehorse Trainers’ Association of Jamaica (URTAJ) Trophy headlines tomorrow’s exciting 10-race card at Caymanas Park.
Ten thoroughbreds — imported three-year-olds and upward (non-winners of three) and native-bred three-year-olds and four-year-olds (non-winners of four) — will compete over 9 furlongs and 25 yards (1,820 meters)
Below, the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide analyses each runner and their chances of winning.
1.
UNRULY DON: (3 b c by Savoy Stomp – Lady Mandi) – Recent winner who is unlikely to repeat.
2.
AMMA: (3 b f by Bern Identity – Blufield) – Won over this distance (1:58.0) on October 19, but faces tougher competition here. A
3.
CAPTAIN SPARROW: (3 b c by Savoy Stomp – Rackam’s Mistress) – Was expected to figure in the Winston Griffiths Classic over 9 ½ furlongs (1,900m) on September 8 but failed to land a blow. However, Captain Sparrow was just a length behind Crown Chaser and Run Julie Run in the 12-furlong (2,400m) Jamaica Derby on August 6. Captain Sparrow should use his class to put these away.
4.
PRINCE AMAAN: (3 ch c by Sensational Slam – Slam) –Distance poses significant challenge.
5.
ROSETTA: ( 3 rn f by Bold Conquest – Khadiliah) – Outside chance following impressive preparations.
6.
ZULU WARRIOR: (3 ch c by Soul Warrior – Lookatmenow) – Unlikely victor.
7.
SHEER DELIGHT (USA): (3 dk b c by Girvin – Pantyhose) –Has raced two times on local soil so far and has finished in third place on both occasions. Sheer Delight is a potential winner.
8.
MACK AND ROME: (3 b c Bold Conquest – Gold Miner) –Made one move to win at distance on October 20, clocking a fast 1:56.1. If he can reproduce that effort, then Mack and Rome can surely win.
9.
BRENDA BOY: (3 b c by Savoy Stomp – Delightful Brenda)– Is going to be left behind in this one.
10.
PRINCESS AMAHLE (USA): (3 b f by Klimt – Nuestra Union)– Finished second behind Mack and Rome on October 20. With Mack and Rome present here, Princess Amahle’s chances of winning are very slim.
