The 2024-25 NFL season: Close games in Week 10, Week 11 promises fireworks
Week 10 of the 2024/25 National Football League (NFL) regular season saw seven of the 14 games ending with a three-point or less margin of victory, with games that some teams had no business winning, including the three teams highest favoured by JustBet to win the Super Bowl, namely: the Baltimore Ravens held off the Cincinnati Bengals for a 35-34 victory last week Thursday, after a fierce fourth quarter; the defending champions Kansas City Chiefs blocked a potential game-winning field goal by the Denver Broncos as time expired, for a 16-14 win, and the Detroit Lions roared from behind for a 26-23 win over the Houston Texans.
In what was a fairly pedestrian first three quarters, the offence of both the Ravens and Bengals caught fire in the fourth quarter, and a shootout ensued. Between them, 33 total points were scored in the final stanza, which resulted in a back-and-forth game that was just as dramatic as their first meeting in Week 5. Joe Burrow, Cincinnati’s quarterback (QB), was outstanding – 428 passing yards and four touchdowns – and Ja’Marr Chase was at his incredible best – 264 yards and three touchdowns – but they were unable to avoid the loss at the hands of the Ravens for the second time this season.
The ‘Cardiac Chiefs’ appear to be making a habit of dramatic endings this season, and last Sunday was no exception, and again, they refuse to lose. Despite tight end Travis Kelce scoring his second touchdown of the season, the Kansas City offence was still not able to gather any traction and ended the first half trailing 10-14. However, as has been the case this year, the defence answered the call, and in the second half held the Broncos scoreless, thereby ensuring that the six points scored by the offence after the break was enough for the win. Of course, the special team’s blocking of a relative chip-shot secured the victory in dramatic fashion.
The Lions, playing under the proverbial lights last Sunday night, found themselves in a 7-23 hole at half-time against the Texans, and QB Jared Goff ended with five interceptions for the night (one more than the first eight games combined). They returned after half-time with a lot more pep in their step, holding the Texans scoreless while adding 19 points of their own, including two long, heart-stopping field goals by kicker Jake Bates. The 25-year-old nailed a 58-yard field goal with 5:06 left in the game, to even things up at 23-23, then later hit a game-winning 52-yarder as time expired.
The Lions (8-1) are the first team since the Atlanta Falcons in 2012 to win despite throwing five interceptions in a game and they welcome the Jacksonville Jaguars (2-8) into Ford Field this Sunday in what is expected to be a mismatch. The Jaguars are the biggest NFL underdog on the slate this weekend, sharing the worst record in the league along with the New York Giants, and very little resistance is expected from them – expect a Detroit win.
The Ravens (7-3) visit Acrisure Stadium this Sunday afternoon to tackle the Pittsburgh Steelers (7-2) in an expected blockbuster. Pittsburgh’s QB Russell Wilson has impressed in his two starts this season, winning both, but this will be his biggest test thus far. And while Baltimore’s QB Lamar Jackson is having a stellar year under centre, the key to the game will come down to the performance of running back Derrick Henry.
Henry leads the league with 1,120 rushing yards and is the fifth player since 1970 to score a touchdown in each of the first 10 games of a season, joining the elite list with OJ Simpson (1975), John Riggins (1983), Jerry Rice (1987) and Todd Gurley (2018). The Ravens are 6-0 when Henry rushes for over 90 yards, but are 1-3 when he is held below, and they will need him to be a beast this weekend if they expect to win.
That said, the Steelers have faced Henry three times during his career – 2017, 2020, and 2023 – and have succeeded in limiting his output, winning each encounter. In 2017, they constrained Henry to 32 rushing yards on seven attempts. In 2020, when Henry averaged 5.4 yards per carry on 378 attempts, rushing for 2,027 yards, and scoring 17 rushing touchdowns, the Steelers tamed the beast in their Week 7 matchup against the Tennessee Titans, restricting him to 75 yards on 20 attempts. When the teams met again last year, Henry’s yardage was again held to the same 75.
This is a different year, and Henry is on a much better team, so strap in and hold on for the ride. The Ravens are favoured by JustBet to win, and they should, but it is expected to be very interesting.
The defending champion Chiefs (9-0) have it all to do when they visit the Buffalo Bills (8-2) late Sunday afternoon. Despite being in different divisions, this encounter has achieved the feel of a rivalry since QBs Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs) and Josh Allen (Bills) entered the fray. The most interesting statistic for this QB clash is Allen’s regular-season record (3-1) against the Chiefs in his career, but Mahomes is a perfect 3-0 over him in the postseason.
Through 10 games, Allen ranks in the top five among all quarterbacks in passing touchdowns (17) and quarterback rating (QBR) (70.3), while also throwing just four interceptions. His yards per completion (12) is the highest since his rookie year and with his rushing ability, has a knack for avoiding sacks. And while Mahomes is no slouch, his QBR against the Bills is starkly different in the regular season compared to the playoffs, 85.1 versus 126.6. In the same breath, similar to their last visit, the Chiefs enter Highmark Stadium as JustBet underdogs, where they last emerged 27-24 winners last January, albeit it was in the postseason.
If the Chiefs pull off the win, they will be 10-0 for the first time in their history and would extend their win streak to 16 games, dating back to their last loss on Christmas Day last year. A win for the Bills would not only avenge the last encounter, but they would hand the Chiefs their first loss of the season and edge closer to the top of the American Football Conference.
CBS has announced that its ‘The NFL Today’ pre-game show will be hosted at Highmark Stadium, which they normally reserve for the Super Bowl and conference championship games, so this is expected to attract massive ratings. This is must-see television, if ever there was, with Mahomes and Allen, along with their cast of gridiron talent, expected to deliver on the promise. Are you ready for some football?
