Garvey Maceo and STETHS take big steps towards d’Cup semis
Former champions Garvey Maceo High and St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) took steps towards qualifying for the semi-finals of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition after scoring big wins over Munro College and Frome Technical, respectively, in their quarter-final games on Wednesday.
Garvey Maceo High scored three goals in the final 16 minutes of their game at Glenmuir High to beat Munro College 3-0 and took over the lead in Group B while STETHS came from a goal down to beat Frome Technical 3-1 at Llandilo Community Centre to be second in Group A behind semi-final qualifiers Glenmuir High.
In the other game played Wednesday, Ocho Rios High came back from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw against Central High at Wembley Centre of Excellence.
Garvey Maceo, who were second on goal-difference behind Glenmuir High in their first-round group, are on four points after their 2-2 draw against Central High on Saturday.
Central High and Ocho Rios High are on two points and Munro College at the foot of the tables on one.
Glenmuir High, who won back-to-back games to stay perfect since the end of the first round, are through to the semis, leading STETHS by two points, McGrath High are on one and Frome Technical still to open their account.
Frome Technical were losing consecutive games after leading, following Saturday’s capitulation against Glenmuir High, and have been eliminated from contention for a place in the daCosta Cup semi-finals.
Since playing out a farcical 0-0 draw in the Round of 16 to solidify their place in the quarter-final, Munro College and Frome have failed to win in their subsequent two games.
Despite Group B being wide open Munro College are at the foot of Group B, on one point and must beat Central High by at least two goals.
On Wednesday, Rushawn Whyte gave Garvey Maceo the lead in the 74th minute when he dribbled almost the entire field to beat the Munro College goalkeeper.
Omarian O’Brian doubled the lead in the 78th minute before Rakeesh Jones added a third goal in time added.
At Llandilo, STETHS got goals from Justin McPherson, Jordan Blake and Kaieem Lewis to get past Frome Technical, who ended the game with 10 players.
