Isaac Hayden eagerly awaits Reggae Boyz debut
KINGSTON, Jamaica — England-born midfielder Isaac Hayden is poised to make his highly anticipated debut for Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz in the Concacaf Nations League (CNL) quarter-final clash against the United States.
The first-leg of the CNL quarter-final clash is set for the National Stadium Wednesday with the return leg set for November 18 at Energizer Park.
“Things have been really, really good,” Hayden enthusiastically shared with the Jamaica Football Federation media.
“The first day’s been fantastic. The lads and staff welcomed me wonderfully. I’m really excited to be here and hoping to contribute,” the 29-year-old added.
Hayden’s Jamaican heritage makes this debut special.
“My father and grandparents were born here… I have some family members here that I know will attend Thursday’s game,” he said.
“Finally getting [the switch] done feels amazing. It’s been a long time coming,” added Hayden, who had represented England at the Under-16 to the Under-21 levels.
Adjusting to Caribbean conditions has been seamless.
“Training’s been fine, smooth sailing. I’ve had good sessions with the lads… acclimatising to the weather has been enjoyable. I am really enjoying myself so far,” said Hayden, who plays as a defensive midfielder or centre-back for Premier League club Newcastle United.
Hayden credits familiar Coach Steve McClaren for easing his transition.
“I’ve known the gaffer a while…We had a few conversations before and he thought I could positively impact the group. I want to contribute, improve our Nations League chances, and ultimately, World Cup qualification — a huge goal,” he emphasised.
Hayden pointed out that he is relishing debuting on Jamaican soil.
“The atmosphere will be electric…we’ll make Jamaica proud.”
