Glenmuir into daCosta semis
GLENMUIR High are back in the semi-finals of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition for a second-straight season, after coming from a goal down to beat McGrath High 4-1 in their quarter-final game played at Glenmuir High on Tuesday.
The win was their second-consecutive in the round following their 4-3 win over Frome Technical on Saturday, and now their place in the top four of the daCosta Cup and the first round of the ISSA Champions Cup is secured.
Orel Miller and Orane Watson both scored doubles for Glenmuir High after Dontae Anderson had scored for McGrath High to take the early lead.
Today six other teams will be seeking their first win of the round when the competition continues with three games. Frome Technical will take on St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) at Llandilo Sports Complex in Group A; Central High and Ocho Rios will meet at Wembley Centre of Excellence ; and Garvey Maceo High go up against Munro College at Glenmuir High.
Frome Technical will hope to rebound after just coming up short in a seven-goal thriller against Glenmuir, giving up a two-goals lead at half-time to lose 4-3 when they host STETHS.
Saturday’s loss was the first for Frome Technical this season, and they must get a result today if they are to extend their run in the daCosta Cup — but they will be facing one of the best defences in the competition.
STETHS have conceded just three goals in their last seven games, winning four games and drawing the other three, and they will hope to put the brakes on a Frome Technical team that ironically could have played their best game on Saturday.
Ocho Rios High have shown resilience all season and will journey across the country for the second-consecutive time when they travel to Clarendon today, after playing out a 1-1 draw at Munro College on Friday.
They lost six points in their first round, after they were found to have used an ineligible player in two games, but still won the zone. And when faced with their season coming to an end in the final game of the round of 16, rallied from two goals down to earn a draw against Dinthill Technical, including a goal in time added.
Kenau Reid has become their go-to scorer — netting against Dinthill Technical and also giving his team the lead against Munro College — and he will be expected to lead the attack again today.
Central High are hoping to get back to the final after their first appearance in 2022, and will hope their momentum from Saturday’s comeback from 2-0 down to earn a draw against Garvey Maceo to get them through.
Central High were two goals down after just eight minutes but came back to earn a point and will be gunning for a win today if they are to maintain any hope of making progress to the semi-finals.
