Glenmuir on brink of daCosta semi
GLENMUIR High can become the first semi-finalists in the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition and the first qualifier for the ISSA Champions Cup competition with a win over McGrath High in their quarter-final Group A game set to be played at Glenmuir High today at 3:00 pm.
Glenmuir were the only winners in the first set of quarter-final games, coming from two goals down to beat Frome Technical 4-3 in a pulsating second half on Saturday.
Two games are scheduled for today, with Central High and Ocho Rios meeting in a Group B game at Wembley Centre of Excellence.
Another win today would secure Glenmuir High’s place in the next round, but they will face a McGrath High team that played to a 1-1 draw with St Elizabeth Technical in Santa Cruz on Saturday.
After playing six games without conceding a goal, Glenmuir High showed some vulnerabilities against Frome Technical on Saturday, letting in three goals — two from set plays in just under 35 minutes in the first half.
McGrath High are the highest-scoring team since the end of the first round, with 19 goals scored, but have also allowed the most goals with 10 against.
Ocho Rios High have shown resilience all season and will journey across the country for the second-consecutive time when they travel to Clarendon today, after playing out a 1-1 draw at Munro College on Friday.
They lost six points in their first round, after they were found to have used an ineligible player in two games, but still won the zone. And when faced with their season coming to an end in the final game of the round of 16, Ocho Rios rallied from two goals down to earn a draw against Dinthill Technical, including a goal in time added.
Keanu Reid has become their go-to scorer, netting against Dinthill Technical and also giving them the lead against Munro College — and he will be expected to lead the attack again today.
Central High are hoping to get back to the final after their first appearance in 2022, and will hope their momentum from Saturday’s comeback from 2-0 down to earn a draw against Garvey Maceo will get them through.
Central High were two goals down after just eight minutes but came back to earn a point, and they will be gunning for a win today.
