Four former champs enter daCosta quarters today
FOUR former champions will make their first appearance in the quarter-finals of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition when the round continues with three games today.
They are St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS), Garvey Maceo High, Glenmuir High, and Frome Technical, who will meet in a Group A game — the second of a double-header at Glenmuir High in May Pen.
STETHS will be at home to McGrath High in Santa Cruz, and Garvey Maceo High and Central High will meet in the first game at Glenmuir.
Yesterday, Munro College and Ocho Rios High played out a 1-1 stalemate at Munro College as the quarter-finals got underway after nearly a week, following the round of 16 coming to an end on Saturday.
Keanu Reid gave Ocho Rios High an early lead before Ackel Vesprey levelled for Munro College midway the first half.
Both schools were coming off draws to end their round-of-16 competition, Ocho Rios coming from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw in dramatic fashion in time added on against Dinthill Technical, edging the former champions on goal difference for a place in the quarter-final.
Munro College, meanwhile, had played out a 0-0 draw with Frome Technical as both teams cruised to the quarter-finals.’
Today Glenmuir High, who along with Garvey Maceo High are the only teams to return to the quarter-finals from last season, are looking to extend their run of games without conceding a goal to seven straight.
The game against Frome Technical, which will be their first meeting since Glenmuir High won 2-1 when they met in the round of 16 last year, will see two teams that have combined to concede one goal in their last six games each.
Glenmuir High have cruised since the end of the first round — during which they lost their final two games — and have scored 14 goals in their last six games without conceding.
Frome Technical have not conceded in their last two games, and only conceded once in their previous six games.
Glenmuir High have doubled Frome Technical’s seven goals scored and, on paper, will start favourite — especially because they’ll be playing at home.
Garvey Maceo High will hope to avenge their 1-0 loss to Central High when they meet today as both seek to get a winning start, while STETHS and McGrath High are meeting for the first time since the quarter-finals in 2019 when the former champions won 2-1.
