2024 Reggae Grammy nominees extend gratitude
Shenseea, Vybz Kartel, Collie Buddz, The Wailers, and music inspired by the Bob Marley: One Love biopic are the nominees in the Best Reggae Album category for the 67th annual Grammy Awards.
The announcement, made on Friday morning, yielded an emotional reaction from Shenseea, who earned the Grammy nod for her sophomore album Never Gets Late Here.
“Thank you to everyone who listened to the project, who streamed the project, [and] played it over and over… To everyone who helped me to curate the project, [and] who stayed with me through 4:00 am, 5:00 am and 6:00 am in the morning — my managers, my whole team, oh, my God,” she said in-between tears on Friday.
Never Gets Late Here made the cut just six months after its release via Rich Immigrants/Interscope. It made its debut at #4 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart, and opened at #18 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart.
On the other hand, Bermudian reggae artiste Collie Buddz was also thrilled at his nomination.
“Younger me is smiling and getting jacked up on Capri-Suns. Congrats to all the nominees! What an honour to be amongst legends and such talent. Thank you to The Recording Academy for continuing to recognise reggae music; a genre loved and cherished by countless millions worldwide. Thank you to everyone who helped make this album possible,” he said on Friday.
His project, Take It Easy was released in September 2023 and features B-Real, Bounty Killer, Demarco, Keznamdi, and Danny Towers. It opened at #10 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart.
Music inspired by the movie Bob Marley: One Love also earned a nomination in the Best Music-Themed Film, Biopic or Musical category. The official Instagram page for the biopic acknowledged the nominations thus: “We give thanks for all the recognition and congrats to all involved.”
The film’s soundtrack features No Woman No Cry by Shenseea, Misty Morning by Shenseea, Waiting In Vain by Daniel Caesar, and Exodus by Skip Marley. It was released on February 14 this year to coincide with the film’s release date.
Vybz Kartel also acknowledged his first Grammy nomination online with a simple message that read, “I don’t care who’s doing better than me. I’m doing better than I was last year!!! Me vs me. May the best man win!!! God is the greatest.”
His album, Party With Me, was also released in May via Adidjahiem Records. It soared to #2 in the Top 100 reggae albums on iTunes shortly after its release.
Evolution by The Wailers was released just August 30 this year. It was produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Emilio Estefan Jr on Crescent Moon Records.
A post made to the group’s official Instagram account also shared gratitude.
“…This album marks a powerful new chapter in our journey, and we’re beyond grateful to share it with you all,” it read in part.
For her part, Minister of Culture and Entertainment Olivia Grange congratulated the nominees for the Reggae Grammy.
“[T]hey all produced good work and are being recognised with Grammy nominations,” she said, wishing them all well.
