Police hunt underway in South Carolina after 40 monkeys escape research facility
SOUTH CAROLINA, United States – A police search is underway after 40 monkeys escaped from a research facility in South Carolina on Wednesday night.
According to a report from NBC News, the animals escaped from Alpha Genesis, a business that provides “nonhuman primate products and bio-research services.” The company reportedly works with monkeys to carry out clinical trials, including on brain disease disorder treatments.
It is not known what trials the escaped monkeys were taking part in, nor whether they were exposed to any diseases.
Police say traps have been set as officials use thermal imaging cameras in an attempt to recapture the animals.
Residents have since been advised to keep doors and windows secured to prevent the monkeys from entering their premises. Meanwhile, anyone who encounters one of the animals is being urged not to interact with it. Instead, they should call 911.
