PNP councillor bemoans ‘lack of police vehicles’ in St Mary
ST MARY, Jamaica – People’s National Party (PNP) councillor for the Gayle division in St Mary, Jouvaughnie Byfield is urging the government to address what he says is a critical shortage of service vehicles at police stations across the parish.
Byfield specifically cited the Oracabessa, Castleton and Prospect police stations as being among the locations in desperate need of service vehicles.
“The lack of service vehicles severely hampers the ability of our police officers to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies,” Byfield said in a news release, adding “As we approach the Christmas season, it is imperative that our law enforcement agencies are fully equipped to ensure the safety and security of our residents.”
Councillor Byfield, who is also the junior shadow minister of security, said the alleged shortage is resulting in an inability for police to conduct regular patrols and respond promptly to incidents, which he said undermines public trust in the police force and leaves residents feeling vulnerable.
“The situation in St. Mary is representative of most rural parishes, where police stations in deep rural areas are often left without a functional vehicle as PSTEB and Specialized Ops commandeer the best vehicular resources. We cannot afford to have our police stations operating without the necessary resources, especially during a time when criminal activities tend to spike,” Byfield said.
“I urge the government to prioritise the allocation of service vehicles to these stations immediately. The safety of our citizens must come first,” he added.
Byfield also called on community members to remain vigilant and supportive of local law enforcement efforts.
“While we await government action, I encourage residents to work together and support our police officers in any way possible. Community cooperation is vital in maintaining peace and security,” he said.
