Candidates now set sights on Nov 22 by-elections
Two candidates who unsuccessfully contested the 2020 General Election on People’s National Party (PNP) tickets — Lloyd “Mozy” Gillians and Rohan Banks — were among three candidates nominated as independents on Wednesday to contest the November 22 by-elections in Trelawny Southern and St Andrew North Western, respectively.
The third independent candidate, Carl O’Neal Marshall, former speaker of the House of Representatives who said he is still a member of the PNP, was also nominated to contest the St Andrew North Western seat.
The governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) nominated former Member of Parliament Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert to contest the Trelawny Southern seat just over one year after she resigned from Parliament, while three-time Councillor Duane Smith was nominated in St Andrew North Western to fill the vacancy created with the recent resignation of Dr Nigel Clarke.
The PNP did not nominate candidates for these seats in keeping with its decision not to contest any parliamentary by-elections in the lead-up to the next general election constitutionally due by September 2025.
There were also four nominations for by-elections in two municipal divisions — Aenon Town in Clarendon Northern and Morant Bay in St Thomas Eastern.
