Pinkney praises Sunshine Girls’ togetherness ahead of Fast5 Series
The 2024 Fast5 Netball World Series begins this weekend, and Sunshine Girl Amanda Pinkney says the squad is eager to shake up the competition with their enthusiasm, lightning-fast moves, and steadfast togetherness.
The Fast5 Netball World Series is to take place from November 9-10 at Christchurch’s Wolfbrook Arena, New Zealand. The six top-ranked teams in the world — New Zealand, Australia, England, Jamaica, South Africa, and Uganda — are to compete in the tournament .
Pinkney stated that since landing in New Zealand, the players have settled in. Despite being thousands of miles from Jamaican soil, Pinkney said the vibe and familiarity within the camp have brought them comfort.
“It’s like we have a second family here,” Pinkney, the squad’s lead goal attack, told the
Jamaica Observer from her base in New Zealand.
“The team has really come together, and that’s what makes this experience so special. We’re getting used to the time zone, and the vibe has been so positive. Everyone’s really focused and excited.
“It [welcoming] was absolutely wonderful. The locals have been so welcoming, and we feel really supported. Netball is huge here, so there’s this real sense of excitement from everyone we meet, whether it’s fans or even just people we see out and about,” Pinkney further said.
As Jamaica prepares to face top-ranked teams, Pinkney said that their focus is unwavering.
“We’re here to win. We’ve worked tirelessly to perfect our game, and we trust each other implicitly. That’s the Jamaican way – united, driven, and proud,” Pinkney asserted.
“Our main goal is to build on our team chemistry and showcase our skills in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. We’re aiming to make it to the finals, but we’re also excited to enjoy the unique energy that Fast5 brings.
“The speed of the game and the energy of the crowd, I just love it. Fast5 is such a unique format; it’s intense and requires quick decision-making, which makes every play so exciting. Plus, the atmosphere is electric, with fans really getting into the short, high-scoring quarters,” Pinkney added.
Pinkney said that training has been intense so far leading up to the tournament?
“But it [training] is so rewarding. We focus a lot on conditioning, agility, and strength training because Fast5 demands quick sprints and rapid changes in direction. We’ve also been doing a lot of shooting drills, especially practising the long shots, since those can really turn a game around in this format,” she explained.
Beyond the court, Pinkney said that the Jamaica senior netball team embodies the sport’s unifying spirit. In a country where music, culture, and sports intertwine, netball has become a symbol of national pride.
“Netball brings us together,” Pinkney reflected. “It’s more than just a game – it’s a representation of our resilience, our passion, and our unity,” she said.
For Pinkney, competing in New Zealand, the epicentre of netball, is a lifelong ambition fulfilled.
“Playing in New Zealand is a dream come true for any netballer,” Pinkney exclaimed.
Pinkney praises New Zealand’s rich netball culture, where the sport is revered and deeply ingrained.
“There’s a real sense of respect and admiration for the sport here. It makes the experience truly special. You can feel the passion in the stadiums – it’s contagious,” Pinkney said. “It really motivates us to give our best.”
When they’re not dominating the netball court, Pinkney said the Sunshine Girls have been immersing themselves in New Zealand’s vibrant culture and breathtaking scenery.
“Yes, we’ve had a little bit of downtime to explore, and it’s been amazing. The food has been incredible. We’ve tried some amazing dishes,” Pinkney exclaimed.
With the tournament schedule permitting, the Sunshine Girls are eager to explore more of New Zealand’s stunning attractions.
“We’re hoping to see a few more sights before the tournament ends,” Pinkney said. “New Zealand is so beautiful — we can’t wait to discover more.”
