New Black River creative arts centre to push youth in film production
OUT of the vibrant Black River Film Festival has come an exciting new initiative, Delroy Slowley Creative Arts Centre, which promises to create new opportunities for growth and the long-term development of youth in film production.
Launched by St Elizabeth North Eastern Member of Parliament Delroy Slowley, the centre is poised to become a premier hub for young creatives in the region, offering hands-on training in all aspects of film production — from writing and scripting to acting, cinematography, and post-production.
In collaboration with Yaad Bridge Entertainment Limited, the creative arts centre is uniquely positioned as a facilitator, providing industry insights and professional mentorship.
“Our Jamaican film industry is poised to take its place in the global market. We have a responsibility to prepare our future generations to ensure our film legacy remains with us, and that we are the ones telling our stories,” said Sherando Ferril, CEO of Yaad Bridge Entertainment and chief workshop facilitator.
Students will leave the four-day workshop with enough knowledge to go off and make a film of their own.
The Black River Youth Film Festival, a key partner, will support the centre’s mission to teach practical film-making skills and inspire a new generation of talent within the parish.
“Our young people have incredible stories to tell,” said Slowley.
“By equipping them with the skills and resources to tell those stories through film, we’re not only giving them a creative outlet but also creating career opportunities and strengthening our cultural heritage,” added Slowley.
As part of the programme the films produced by students will be featured in a special Christmas showcase at which the community will be invited to celebrate the holiday season and support emerging talent.
The Delroy Slowley Creative Arts Centre is expected to represent a significant step forward in creating a sustainable creative industry within St Elizabeth.
With this investment in youth and the arts, Slowley and the partnering organisations are hoping to foster a culture of creativity, collaboration, and community pride.
