‘Alpha’ Class of 1974 celebrates 50-year reunion with giveback
Members of the Convent of Mercy “Alpha” Academy Class of 1974 returned to their alma mater recently to mark a cherished milestone — 50 years since they last walked the school’s grounds as students.
Over three days of laughter, memories, and conversations, the members of the Class of 1974 reconnected, reflecting on the friendships and values that shaped their lives.
“This reunion was a golden opportunity to reunite in a way that’s meaningful to each of us, to honour our shared past, and to witness how Jamaica has evolved,” said Valerie Thompson-Sparks, chair of the Class of 1974 planning committee, who is now a retired lawyer living in England.
“When I reached out to 20 of my classmates, everyone agreed we couldn’t let this moment pass us by. Coming back felt like coming home,” said Thompson-Sparks.
The visit also held a deeper purpose, a cash donation to the school’s student welfare programme, supporting students in need.
Cali McMorris, principal of the Convent of Mercy, expressed her gratitude.
“Our school is a supportive community, emotionally, socially, and financially. This year, we’ve had more than 50 students needing help with uniforms, transport, materials, or meals. Our big sisters have made it possible to do more, and the support from the Class of 1974 will be instrumental in making sure every Alpharian feels cared for,” said McMorris.
A highlight of the reunion was the school tour, led by Head Girl Danae Peters, who said the experience held a special meaning.
“I saw a different perspective of my Alpha sisters and their stories left an impact on me. Their past experiences gave me hope that the school’s spirit will continue to live on. This visit opened my eyes showing the importance of coming back and giving back. I am grateful for the experiences that were shared proving that once an Alpharian, always an Alpharian,” said Peters.
Reflecting on her journey, committee member Esther McLean, a retired tax administrator, encouraged today’s students to seize every opportunity Alpha offers.
“Hold onto your dreams and carry the strength of this community with you. It’s a part of who you are,” said McLean.
