What about Clarendon Central?
Dear Editor,
I write as a concerned resident of Clarendon Central, where we are facing an unsettling situation regarding our representation in Parliament.
Mike Henry has served as our Member of Parliament (MP) since 1976. Now, at around 90 years old, it is evident that a new representative is needed to actively address the many long-standing issues in our community. Yet, despite election season being upon us, there is still no clarity or transparency on who will succeed him.
It is widely rumoured that Henry favours current May Pen Mayor Joel Williams, while Prime Minister Andrew Holness reportedly backs former Kingston Mayor Donovan Williams. Are we, as constituents, expected to simply accept a last-minute choice without the opportunity to meet with potential candidates, discuss our needs, and assess who will best serve our interests? Additionally, the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) has shown little to no activity in our area, leaving us further in the dark.
In our search for a capable representative, we urge the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) to consider Lorraine Green-Mason, the recent candidate for the May Pen West Division in the local government election. Green-Mason, an animated advocate and committed voice for the people, is from the constituency and understands the challenges we face. With more support from the JLP, she could be an inspiring and effective leader who would prioritise the needs of the constituency.
In a section of the Farm/Sevens Road area, for example, a long-standing road infrastructure issue has frustrated residents. The landowner, unable to provide legal proof of ownership, has not secured a title for the land, which is currently leased. This issue has halted any effort to improve the road, with the landowner refusing repairs, citing it as private land. This matter has gone unresolved for too long, and we need strong political leadership to help find a solution.
The people of Clarendon Central deserve more than a last-minute, top-down decision on who will represent us. We are a community with real needs, and we deserve a candidate who is ready and willing to listen and advocate for meaningful improvements.
We call on MP Henry, Prime Minister Holness, and the JLP to prioritise the interests of constituents and introduce potential successors immediately.
Clarendon Central’s future matters, and we are ready for leadership that reflects this.
