Give us leaders with vision
Dear Editor,
Monday morning saw confusion across various educational institutions, as both teachers and students navigated the decision-making chaos brought on by uncertain weather conditions.
The Ministry of Education update on Sunday delegated authority to school administrators, advising them to make decisions based on the evolving situation. However, while some administrators acted with foresight, others delayed decisions until the last minute, causing unnecessary stress for students, educators, and parents alike.
Several schools deserve recognition for their proactive stance, choosing early on to transition to online learning. This timely decision allowed commuters — especially those travelling significant distances — to plan accordingly. Educators also had the lead time needed to adjust their lesson plans, ensuring that students could still benefit from a full day of online learning.
This forward-thinking approach extended to parents as well, who were able to arrange for supervision and prepare resources, such as securing adequate data for internet connectivity.
Yet not all school leaders exercised this level of consideration. A few institutions, in stark contrast, hesitated and opted to require in-person attendance despite the logistical and safety challenges posed by the weather. This delay in decision-making disproportionately affected those travelling from afar and created additional concerns about safety and resource allocation.
This recent event highlights a pressing need for school leadership that is equipped with vision, foresight, and the ability to act decisively. The best decisions take into account the well-being of everyone involved, not just the institution’s immediate needs. Schools with leaders who demonstrate these qualities foster an environment of trust, in which students, educators, and parents feel seen, respected, and supported.
At a time when adaptable, empathetic leadership is more critical than ever, it’s essential that we champion leaders who prioritise effective communication and timely action. Such leaders are not only prepared for any given day but also committed to shaping an educational environment that values preparation, safety, and community.
The call is clear: Give us leaders with vision!
