Volunteers Inc, NET launch project for free glasses for young people
VOLUNTEERS Inc, in collaboration with the National Education Trust (NET), has announced the launch of the 2000 Visions Project. This initiative will provide free prescription glasses to 2,000 children and young adults across Jamaica, addressing critical vision care needs that impact academic performance and daily life for many in underserved communities.
Vision problems affect approximately 25 per cent of school-aged children, significantly hindering their academic performance. Additionally, over 30 per cent of Jamaican families live below the poverty line, limiting access to essential resources, including healthcare. The project seeks to conduct approximately 3,000 vision screenings and conduct over 2,500 comprehensive eye examinations, ultimately benefiting over 2000 children directly improving their educational experience and overall quality of life.
In addition to improving academic engagement, this initiative will promote health equity by ensuring children receive necessary vision care services and educating communities about the importance of regular eye exams. Through these efforts, Volunteers Inc and NET are working together to reduce the prevalence of untreated vision impairments among the target population.
NET is an entity of the Government of Jamaica responsible for mobilising funds and resources to enhance educational infrastructure and access. Through strategic partnerships, NET supports initiatives that improve educational outcomes and create opportunities for the youth of Jamaica.
Executive Director of NET Latoya Harris-Ghartey expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership.
“Together, we are laying the foundation for a brighter future for the youth of Jamaica through improved vision care, ensuring that they have the tools to thrive both in their education and within their communities,” she said.
Davor Bailey, president of Volunteers Inc, also shared his excitement.
“I am incredibly proud that the National Education Trust has joined forces with us on the 2000 Visions Project, which is Volunteers Inc’s flagship initiative. This collaboration goes beyond addressing a vital health need, it empowers children to reach their full potential in the classroom and beyond. We believe that clear vision is fundamental to academic success and personal growth, and we are committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of their circumstances, has the opportunity to succeed. This project represents the power of community, collaboration and compassion in driving lasting change across Jamaica.”
With the support of 20 partner organisations and 500 volunteer members, the 2000 Visions Project is set to make a significant difference in the lives of its beneficiaries. By enhancing educational outcomes and promoting health equity, this initiative underscores the power of collaboration in creating positive, lasting change.
The project’s estimated cost is US$556,000, with funds supporting the procurement of prescription glasses, screening equipment and the organisation of outreach events. The initiative is poised to not only address urgent vision care needs but also to foster a spirit of community service and responsibility among Jamaican youth.
Volunteers Inc, a non-profit dedicated to empowering young Jamaicans through health initiatives, environmental stewardship and youth development, plays a pivotal role in organising this project.
