Defending champions Clarendon College knocked out of daCosta Cup
MAY PEN, Clarendon – Clarendon College’s quest for a third straight ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup title ended Saturday when they were beaten 2-1 by Cornwall College at Glenmuir High and finished at the bottom of their Round of 16 group.
It was the second loss in the Round of 16 and fifth overall in a disappointing season for Clarendon College who had won four of the last five titles including the daCosta Cup/Olivier Shield double last year.
Deshaun Talbert scored from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute to give Cornwall the lead in the Zone 2 encounter before Dante Escoffrey doubled the advantage in the 43rd minute. Nicholy Forbes got a consolation in the 73rd minute for the outgoing champions.
Early qualifiers Munro College and Frome Technical who played out a listless 0-0 draw at Llandilo Community Centre advanced from the Zone as the qualifiers for the quarterfinals were decided on Saturday.
Ocho Rios High booked their spot from Zone 3 following a dramatic come from behind 2-2 draw against Dinthill Technical at Drax Hall to edge them on goal-difference while St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) and Garvey Maceo both won their games and advanced from Zone 1. They joined Munro College, Glenmuir High, Central High and McGrath High from Zone 4.
Keanu Reid scored a brace for Ocho Rios High, including one in time added at the end of the second half as they ended Dinthill Technical’s decade-plus long stretch of at least getting to the quarterfinals.
Tyrese Gowe and Raheem Harris had given Dinthill Technical what appeared to be a comfortable lead but Reid pulled a goal back in the second half before his dramatic rescue act in time added.
STETHS beat Kemps Hill High 2-0 at Wembley Centre of Excellence to top Zone 1 with seven points while Garvey Maceo whipped Alphansus Davis High 4-0 at Brooks park with Malik Robinson scoring twice as they ended with five points.
Frome Technical needed only a point from their game against already qualified Munro College. Both teams made changes to their regular starting line-ups and rarely got out of first gear in a dull game that saw few tackles and shots at goal.
Glenmuir High completed a perfect round, wining all three games without conceding a goal after clipping 10-man Happy Grove High 1-0 at Carder Park from a Oraine Watson 10th minute strike.
Happy Grove ended the game with 10 players after Bonny Chisholm, the top scorer this season, was sent off in the 80th minute for dangerous foul play.
Central High topped Zone 4 after beating fellow qualifiers McGrath High 2-1 in their game played at Foga Road High.
