WATCH: Jamaican-American confident of a Harris victory as Election Day approaches
ARIZONA, United States — With just a few days to go until election day in the United States, Jamaican-American Leona Cahill says she is confident US Vice-President Kamala Harris will clinch a victory in the run for the White House.
Cahill, who was born in Kingston, told Observer Online that she chose the Democratic party candidate over Republican former President Donald Trump because “the alternative is not good.”
“I have got to support her. I think that she is for the people to make change and be the first woman president,” Cahill said at the Juntos Por Arizona Rodeo on Friday night. She believes the Harris campaign is effectively reaching voters in the key swing state of Arizona.
“I think the message is coming across. We get a lot of phone calls, people knocking on doors and a lot of fliers out. I see a lot of advertisements, so I think they are doing a very good job or making sure that Arizona recognises the importance of coming out and voting. We are a swing state,” she explained.
“I am pretty confident. I am not going to lie. I am concerned, but I think she is going to take it,” added Cahill.
Harris’s father, Donald, an economist and professor emeritus at Stanford University was raised in Brown’s Town, St Ann.
Sharon Newkirk, 55, who is from Chicago is also putting her support behind Harris.
“She is a strong woman and I rather her that knows about our lives, knows about the economy rather than someone who has never been through what we have been through,” Newkirk said.
