Birth of a legacy: Bryce’s visionary cricket academy
Andre Bryce, founder of Bryce’s Cricket Development and Enhancement Academy, has always had a vision to empower vulnerable youth through the sport.
Inspired by cricket’s massive growth globally, Bryce sought to create a nurturing environment in which young talent could flourish.
It all began with a chance meeting with renowned businessman Vicky Amin. Bryce’s enthusiasm and expertise convinced Amin to support his initiative. Thus, Bryce’s Cricket Development and Enhancement Academy was born.
“I was inspired by the exponential growth of cricket globally; with cricket being the number two highly rated, recognised sport,” Bryce reflected.
“When I looked back at the significant numbers of vulnerable youths here in the island who have not been able to gain any form of attention or interest due to no representation, that’s how it all started.”
For over 15 years, Bryce’s Cricket Development and Enhancement Academy has fostered a culture of excellence, embodied in its motto “We Strive for Excellence”.
Bryce’s coaching philosophy emphasises innovation, sportsmanship, discipline, and respect.
“To foster a culture of excellence…to be very innovative with great emphasis being placed on all the elements of the game, and to empower young aspiring cricketers to reach their true potential,” he explained.
Despite operating as a non-profit organisation, the academy has achieved remarkable success. Limited resources haven’t deterred Bryce, who said he often dips into his own pocket to ensure players stay active.
“We’ve been operating as a non-profit organisation since our inception, so we’re unable to employ professional coaches. However, we do have competent coaches affiliated with the academy who’ve maintained their presence and rendered their services voluntarily in the interest of youths’ development,” Bryce told the Jamaica Observer.
Bryce said he is able him to identify players’ vulnerabilities and create customised drills to enhance their skills.
“Based on my coaching experience and expertise, coaching for over 15 years has given me a significant advantage over a lot of coaches in identifying players’ vulnerabilities by their technique.
“We don’t place special emphasis on any particular age group; our focus is well-balanced across the board, so it’s absolutely imperative to have a level playing field,” Bryce emphasised.
“The game has changed significantly since its inception, and a lot of opportunities are there for players who’re serious about taking their game on a global scale. Cricket is not only a game; it’s a career,” he pointed out.
Bryce’s Cricket Academy will wrap up its best of three Bilateral Under-19 Youth Series 2024 this weekend. Game 2 is set for Kensington Cricket Club on Saturday, while Game 3 is to be played on Sunday at Sabina Park.
