WATCH: Port Maria residents appeal for help after homes damaged in landslide
ST MARY, Jamaica – Residents of Cox Street in Port Maria, St Mary are appealing to the authorities for help after a landslide damaged several homes in the community.
The landslide occurred during heavy rains in the town earlier this week.
“The way I felt nervous, all now mi nervous,” Val Thompson, whose house collapsed in the landslide, said as he recounted the incident while combing a rubble for his belongings.
Thompson is asking the Government to assist him in his recovery effort.
“The spot where I am, I wouldn’t mind the government, Member of Parliament and everybody who can give me a strength… mek mi find an ends away from here so I can better myself,” Thompson said.
His neighbour, whose daughter’s home was damaged in the landslide, echoed his plea.
“I love you so much my prime minister, I am asking you please to assist us… my neighbour has nowhere to live and my daughter’s house needs to be fixed, but we don’t have it like that, we are very poor,” the woman said. “I am asking you please to send help towards us.”
