Glenmuir among daCosta Cup quarter-finalists
Clarendon College’s hopes of title defence hit hard by Munro; Frome eliminate Cornwall
Former champions Glenmuir High School and Munro College as well as Central High and McGrath High are through to the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/Wata daCosta Cup quarter-finals after recording wins in the round of 16 on Wednesday.
Glenmuir High extended their run of ‘clean sheets’ to five after a 3-0 win over Ocho Rios High in Zone 3, while Munro College dealt champions Clarendon College’s title defence a massive blow with a 2-1 victory in Zone 2.
Central High and McGrath High were 1-0 winners over Denbigh High and Manchester High, respectively, in Zone 4.
In the day’s other game, Frome Technical stayed on course for a quarter-finals place after edging Cornwall College 1-0 in their Zone 2 match at Jarrett Park in St James.
Orane Watson, Nyron Allen and Nuemonie Blackwood were the scorers for hosts Glenmuir High as they handed Ocho Rios their first loss on the field this season.
Ocho Rios had been docked six points from two matches in the first round when they were penalised for using an ineligible player.
Munro College advanced to the daCosta Cup quarter-finals for the first time in 17 years thanks to a double from Antwone Smith as they pushed the two-time defending champions to the brink of elimination. Munro’s win over Clarendon College was their first at the daCosta Cup level in 24 years.
Central High, the 2022 beaten finalists, are hoping to get back to at least the semi-finals as Antwone Wright got the game winner against Denbigh.
McGrath High, the 2019 semi-finalists and Ben Francis Cup holders, had a similar win over Manchester High as Jim Mitchell scoring his eighth goal of the campaign.
After giving up a late goal against Clarendon College on Saturday and being held to a draw, Frome Technical grabbed all three points on offer against Cornwall College. Dwayne Watts’ diving header in the 26th minute made the difference.
Cleighton Stephens, Frome Technical’s head coach, admitted after the game he was “relieved” at the final whistle. “It was a very nervy one, but we got the three points and we are thankful,” he added.
“We are taking it one game at a time, today it was Cornwall College and Saturday we have Munro College at home so we still have a lot of work to do.”
Theodore Whitmore, the Cornwall College coach, said he thought his team “deserved something from the game”.
He added: “I think the Frome Tech team wanted it more than us this afternoon, so congrats to the Frome team.”
After losing back-to-back games to be eliminated from daCosta Cup contention this season, Whitmore, who is in his first season as coach of the 12-time champions, said they will turn their attention to the Ben Francis Cup for hopes of silverware.
“Once there is a cup to play for you want to be part of it and we just have to get the players in the right frame of mind and come again.
“Not many people expected us to be where we are as we have a fairly young squad. But they worked hard and gave their all, but just fell short at the end. But it was a learning process,” said the Cornwall coach.
